Royal Hawaiian Colocasia

Calliope Dark Red Geranium

Some interesting new plant material was displayed at Pacific Plug & Liner in Watsonville, Ca.  Among them were some Colocasias which were developed by Hawaiian breeder Dr. John Cho and being marketed under the “Royal Hawaiian Colocasia” label.  Five new varieties were offered this year; and, while they weren’t quite as different as we might like, there are several really different varieties now being developed by Dr. Cho.  But, with the five varieties on display, a couple of them did stand out. ‘Blue Hawaii’, for example, had combined large green leaves with prominent bluish-purple veins and a bluish purple leaf margin. ‘Hilo Bay’ had large glossy, olive-green leaves that are ruffled in texture.  We spoke with Dr. Cho at the Plant Haven display and were told of some very exciting new Colocasias for future release; totally unique from the current offerings.

Karen Franck at Greenheart Farms in Arroyo Grande showed us a couple of new varieties of Knock Out roses, the Pink Double and their new yellow, Sunny.  These will be available beginning in January 2009.  Karen was also recommending Drift Roses, a cross between full-size ground cover roses and miniatures.  Drifts are sold primarily in 6” pots, quarts and 1-2 gallon containers.  They continuously bloom, are creepers and are perfect for the small space gardens, containers and hanging baskets.

At Fides we saw one of the more exciting new petunias.  The Wave Double Red was extraordinary.

There were some very interesting new offerings from Syngenta Flowers; one of which we noticed last year; the Rio Dipladenias.  This was breed for pot production only, with minimal tendency to vine.  There is limited amount available this year for trial.  Also, the Bandana Lantanas put on a tremendous display of color.  There was also Calliope Dark Red Geranium which is an interspecific variety, a new break-through in geranium breeding. It is said to have excellent heat performance.  For Florida growers there will be trials at the University of Florida in which Harmony New Guinea Impatiens will be compared with Syngenta’s Super Sonics.

Tim Mitchell’s Trip to Louisiana and Texas

I just recently returned from a two week customer trip to Texas and Louisiana. In an effort to see as many customers as possible following my weekend flight into Houston from SUNNY San Diego, with an emphasis on SUNNY, I might add, I did manage to see many of my past customers from days working at Twyford International. Unfortunately, after having driven over 2,400 miles I failed to see just as many. I really expect to have guilt feelings, at least until August when I’ll be back in Texas for the Texas Nursery and Landscape Expo (BOOTH # 2514). Hopefully, I’ll be able to catch up with many of those that I missed come the dog days of summer.

The first week of this trip was spent darting between Houston and the San Antonio area while attempting to unsuccessfully dodge both rain and mid 30 degree temps. Sometimes it’s a bummer when you don’t own a jacket! By mid week Shiner, Texas was looking like a place I needed to be, but guilt once again set in and customer visits won out keeping me away from the well known AND historic Shiner Brewery. All in all it was a much needed, fun, wet, cold week of seeing some fantastic customers and friends.

Leaving the southern part of the state I headed into north to Forest Hill, home of nursery after nursery after nursery not to mention some great ‘community coffee’. I didn’t even scratch the surface of seeing everyone I wanted to see here in town (and I’ve already been hearing about it!) so I think I’ll hold off  talking about this area of my sales territory until next time, after all…I really do need to get back to work.

Bill and Judy’s Trip to Florida Plant Specialist, a supplier for Bill Moore & Co., Inc.

Judy and Bill Moore visited Florida Plant Specialist on February 7, 2008. FPS is a new supplier for us and our visit was made to become more familiar with this operation.  Ron Fox gave us a great tour and showed us some very innovative and exciting features of his nursery operation.  We were very impressed with the LTL Pallet Shipper on which he can ship in excess of 40,000 plants in 288 flats, enough to fill an acre of six inch pots spaced on one-foot centers. Reliability, quality and the ability to communicate extremely well is a wonderful combination of traits for a propagator/supplier.

1st Blog

Posted:24th Jan, 2008

Hello Everyone!!

Welcome to the new Bill Moore & Co., Inc. blog. I will be updating bi-weekly with information on our company, industry news and upcoming events.

Let me start off by introducing myself. My name is Jillian Mann and I am the most recent addition to BMC. I am an intern working on order tracing as well as developing communication tools for the company. I am brand new to the industry but can’t wait to learn all about it.

TPIE SHOW

The Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition Show was my first trade show. I was overwhelmed by the beautiful plants and set-ups that people had created. I hope that everyone got a chance to stop by and see our booth. We were able to feature many plants from our suppliers. Here are some of the pictures:
